I am writing this as a eulogy to a friend that I just knew I lost on Oct 9, 2009.
Prof Dr Kamaruddin Mat Salleh, or Pak Din as we fondly call him way back in the early nineties when both of us were studying in the States, passed away due to cancer at his home in Kajang, and I just got to know about his demise tonight by a sheer coincidence.
I got to know him since 1979, when I became a freshie at UKM and he was a few years my senior. Since we were both from Kelantan, there were many instances that we interfaced with each other.
Then we parted ways. I knew he joined UKMS and I started my own career.
Till 1991, when I met him again in East Lansing, Michigan.
Then he became active in a student mailing list that I was also involved, the MISG-NET. His moderate, non-partisan writings and ideas shape the thoughts of many Malaysian students in that list during that era.
He came back to Malaysia in 1993 and continued his teaching job in UKM. When I came back in 1997, I visited him in his new office. He took great pains in explaining his obsession in building a new online database for his research works in botany at that time, and we exchanged ideas on how this could be achieved using tools available at that time.
Then our pre-occupation with our careers made us part ways again, even though I still monitor his activities from a distance, and was made aware about his fight with cancer since more than a year ago.
Not wanting to trigger any unnecessary alarm in him throughout his fight with cancer, I just occassionally got some updates about his illness from some friends in UKM. I knew he was recovering quite well from his chemotherapy, to the extent that he managed to go to several field trips for his research works in the region.
Till I got the utter shock of knowing his demise tonight.
Innalillahi wa inna ilaihi raji'un. From Him we came, and unto Him we will return.
Allahummaghfirlahu warhamhu wa'aafihi wa'fu 'anhu.
Rest in peace my dear friend. We will all join you sooner or later.
